It is that time of year with High School formals fast approaching and most of you will be buying a suit for the occasion.
Often it is the first suit you will have owned and you obviously want to not only look good on the night, but be able to wear your suit again in the future on other occasions.
Here are our top 7 tips for buying a suit that can be worn again for other formal events, including job interviews and a day at the races.
Choose a colour of suit that is versatile. I suggest either charcoal or navy. By changing and coordinating with different coloured shirts and ties you can create a number of different outfits. Avoid black as it can be too formal for day time use.
Do not go too slim line in the cut, as it may be deemed inappropriate for job interviews or more formal occasions.
Do get it professionally altered. Ask the tailor to do it in such a way that any excess sleeve/cuff fabric can be accessed as you grow. Ask him not to cut the fabric but merely fold it back and hem.
If you are buying only a couple of shirts, buy at least one blue and one white (80% of shirts purchased in Australia are variations of blue/white)
Avoid novelty ties – good colour choices are variations on blue (sincerity) and red (confidence)
As with most things you get what you pay for – but the rules are the same whether you are buying a $200 suit vs $2,000 suit. Cut is the first consideration, you can always take in a suit but rarely let one out.
Seek out boutiques that have trained staff who can teach you the basics of what to look for when buying a suit.
